Cantilevered addition over deck

Q

Foto

The existing 1970's era neo-colonial's kitchen area was expanded with a 5' x 26' cantilevered addition. This addition, with a new steel beam to support the 2nd floor buried above the ceiling line, was cantilevered so there's no foundation. This allowed us to save the tree directly outside.

angular roof addition breaks up lines - vaulted interior

Q

Feasiblity and cost. A main-level addition on a flat property can be the least expensive square footage you add to your home. But if you throw in a steep slope, an addition below grade, complicated tie-ins to the existing house or difficult access to the construction area, the costs can easily rival the cost of a second-story addition — or even be higher.

Q

Work with what you've got (after): Walls, doors, appliances and even the skylight and kitchen sink were all left where they were. This all avoided costly plumbing, electrical and mechanical work and rework.

vaulting the ceiling dramatically increases the overall spaciousness of the room, as you'll see in the next photo.

many successful shed dormers tend to be all almost window. This maximizes the amount of light entering the interior, visually lightens the structure and creates a nighttime lantern effect. Depending on the size, materials and related work, expect to invest $20,000 to $100,000 or more.

Budget: A doghouse dormer can be built for little money if you have construction skills — and a helper. Depending on the type of window you use and how the interior is finished, a DIY dormer can be done for a few thousand dollars. If you plan to hire out and use pricier materials, expect to invest $15,000 or more on a doghouse dormer.

you can buy a preassembled bow window from just about any big-box home improvement retailer. These bow windows will be smaller and typically will have a shallow arc, but they are very cost-effective ways to get that extra space, light and view. Budget: If you're looking to dramatically change a room and are handy, you can install a bow bay for around $1,500 to $,2000.

a smaller, preassembled bay can be a cost-effective way to get some extra space and light into your home. Many preassembled angled bays sell for less than $1,000, so it won't take much to change your interior with one of these.

A small, cantilevered micro-addition can house an entertainment center, such as this one inside a 30-inch by 11-foot bump-out. The room feels much larger and functions much better with all the electronics, speakers, television and cabinetry out of the way.
