Stain is to alter the color of a wood. Walnut is rich (and pricey) on its own and you wouldn't want to change it's color. Finish- however is necessary to bring out that natural color and to protect the wood over time. With inset sink - SatinSeal waterproof finish. Has some sheen, not to be cut upon or you'd break that surface seal. Some people prefer the more traditional matte look of the Natural Oil + Wax finish- which is more a cutting board style treatment that requires regular re-oiling (easy) to maintain it original luster- more so in wet zones...
