A Spa of One's Own

Don’t Call It Cute! Traditional Sunroom and Spa in San Francisco, California’s Potrero Hill Neighborhood Historical influences and constraints of the site played major roles in the design of this small sunroom and spa addition. The project is located at the rear of an existing Edwardian residence in the Potrero Hill neighborhood of San Francisco. The boldly asymmetrical design made the most of planning code limitations. A kitchen doorway opens into a sunroom with dramatic 18-foot cathedral ceilings. At the far end of the room, beyond a gently arched opening, the spa is cozily tucked into a niche with a pyramidal ceiling. Tying together these potentially disparate forms is a subtle interplay of historically influenced details including a five-foot diameter round window located at the gable end of the roof, wood Doric columns, copper light fixtures, fluted pilasters and picture moldings.
