Designing an Alpine Hideaway Landscaped Garden in Aston Clinton A secluded courtyard garden, alpine planting, slate stone walls and relaxing terrace… a private party garden. More than 20 tonnes of construction materials were needed, managed and expertly constructed in this creative landscaped environment. Brief A courtyard garden that had been left for many years, was very much in need of a re-design. The planting and natural stone terrace had to be updated, reworked and transformed into a new garden. The abundance of alpine trees and succulent planting was something that had to be enhanced. The entertaining terrace needed redesigning, it was essential that the new materials spoke the same language as the existing weathered landscape. Design The open terraced area that cried out for a reclaimed looking terrace. The surrounding raised area is complimented with the tactile nature and appearance of this weathered looking composite decking, although we prefer natural materials it was a perfect match. Millboard Weathered decking does have the look and feel of a reclaimed and very old looking plank of real wood. The colour, Vintage, is a perfect match for this project. A floating bench arrangement perfectly constructed in amongst the alpine Tier stone cladding surrounded by the planting. A satisfying place to sit amongst the overwhelming planting. Imported from Germany, a planting companion to the scheme was the Pinus Mugo tree. Bare stemmed and look stunning when illuminated in the evening. The Wisteria was leaning and completely entwined with an old obelisk, so rather than cutting it out and starting again we pruned carefully, keeping some long stems, then supported the plant - obelisk and all - against the new curved arbour. This photo was taken the first spring after the garden was completed. Wisteria is perfect for growing over an arbour so that you can look up at it, and the scent is held within the space.

This brilliant small courtyard garden is just 6m long by 4m wide and is backed by a railway. The Brief for this design was for a Modern style with dramatic, dark colours and a better arranged entertainment area with BBQ & Bin storage. As the garden is small, it was important for us to create the perfect layout and make use of the sunlight and surrounding features as much as we could. By painting the beautiful 'cobblestone wall' a dark colour and planting tall plants in front, we gave the garden a feeling of lengthening. The BBQ & Bin store not only acts as storage but a surface to cook on and a small herb garden.

This garden design for the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show consisted of 9 regularly spaced reflective pools with planting surrounding each. Inspired by the Roman Baths in Bath, these perfect squares suggested the regularity of the Hypocaust columns and serve as a reminder of the city’s relationship with water. The concept for the planting is ‘A modern meadow’; the mix of forms and colours is intentionally unusual. Well defined flower heads and shrubs in the foreground contrast against a hazy ‘fluffy’ backdrop evocative of steam rising from the hot spring water. The use of plants such as euphorbia, lavender, santolina and rosemary combined with breedon gravel paths evoke a mediterranean feel.

A water Japanese water bowl "tsukubai" collects water from a "Kusari-doi" or rain chain. The beauty of the Kusari-doi is that it gathers water from the roof and conveys it to the ground, and does so artistically, transforming a dull, enclosed downspout into a visual and auditory delight.
