2. Tone Down With Neutrals When using bright, bold colors that could feel overwhelming, create balance by offsetting them with neutral tones. Glencoe clients wanted their teenager’s room to have turquoise walls — the teen’s favorite color — and Kowan offset it with white and gray furnishings, including a white-and-crystal chandelier. “It sparkles and diffuses some of that bold color,” Kowan says. “It’s the happiest feeling when you walk in the room, and it’s not overwhelming because everything else is neutrals. There’s a gray rug, the dark pewter headboard, the chandelier and the crisp white ceiling.”
