There was no closet in Allen’s bedroom, so she had one built. “It is a closet on one side and has a ridiculously large flat-screen TV on the other,” she says. “It separates the dressing area from the rest of the room. We used recycled barn wood and, to keep it from looking too massive, we used glass-paned French doors on both sides and lined them with lace from Calico Corners.”

One of the few upper cabinets is this hutch, which was inspired by English cottage style and has a freestanding furniture look. “It’s a twist on the usual appliance garage,” Archambault says. The tall cabinets, outfitted with bifold doors, house a coffee and tea station, blender, toaster and small countertop microwave. All the electrical outlets are inside the hutch.

How to Buy LEDs You may have noticed that LEDs don’t use a conventional wattage system. Instead, they advertise the amount of light given off, in lumens, versus the amount of energy required to produce the light. For example, a 75-watt incandescent needs a 1,100-lumen LED replacement to throw the comparable quantity of light. Here’s a handy chart showing the incandescent equivalents in LED.
LIGHTS LED, The Color Rendering Index, or CRI, is a measurement of how accurately a light source shows color. Unlike the CCT, the CRI is not about whether the light is physically bluer or yellower, but how authentic the colors appear. They’re two concepts that seem related but are actually different. The CRI is rated on a numerical scale from 0 to 100, 0 being poor and 100 being perfect color accuracy. A CRI rating of 80 and above is considered the best category; as you can see here, the woman’s skin tones look natural in the CRI range of 80 to 100.
The glass chandelier in the breakfast-room solarium was the first item purchased for the home. “The graceful curves of the chandelier help soften the rigid black lines of the space,” Wagner says. The round zinc-topped table is surrounded by laminate-covered dining chairs that can be wiped cleaned with a wet sponge — perfect for a family with two young children.

To prevent the deep units from projecting across the window, Higham designed a breakfront for this run, with the central cabinet protruding slightly farther than those on either side. “This design creates enough space for the appliances without obstructing the window,” he says.

The owner didn’t want tall units on both sides of the room,” Higham says. “This is a really bright space with windows at either end that allow light to flood all the way through. If we had built in lots of cupboards, it would have felt cramped and enclosed.” The solution was to go for simple shapes in pale tones, and to build just base units along one wall, working around existing features. “To accommodate the range cooker, we created deeper cabinets [on] either side of the chimney,” Higham says. “Now this run of units has a clean, continuous line.”
Kristina hung blue and white paper lanterns along the edge of the porch for added visual interest. “We also painted the exterior of the house from the greenish yellow that it was when we bought it,” she says. The end result is a mix of new and old. The couple found the refrigerator on Craigslist and had the wooden shelves custom made by local designer Karen Fraley of Wilamina’s Custom Furniture. The outer wall, which houses the refrigerator, sink and stove, is completely tiled in a herringbone pattern. Kristina says, “I think bringing the herringbone tile all the way up makes a statement and gives the room an added sense of space.”
They replaced all of the kitchen cabinets. “We also found amazing slabs of Vermont Danby marble and decided on a 3-inch mitered edge on our island and a 9-inch overhang,” she says. They found Ramos Marble and Granite to do exactly what they wanted.
ndoor-outdoor shower. While certainly not appropriate for all climates, in a sunny locale like Southern California or Sydney, Australia, there’s no reason not to move the shower outdoors. With privacy and open air, an indoor-outdoor shower connected to the bath by a glass door provides the best of both worlds.
Herringbone tile floor. Less costly than laying wood floors in the bath, as well as more hard-wearing, a wood-look tile in a herringbone pattern offers the appearance of wood while preserving your budget.
Wood-look shiplap. Keep a beach-inspired look going right through the bath without worrying about water damage with Corian sheet, cut to look like shiplap. In this master bath, the ceiling and walls are poplar wood shiplap siding, and the area inside the shower is Corian fabricated to match.
Driftwood mirror. Sometimes one change is all you need to drastically alter the look and feel of a space.
