Who: Karen B Wolf
Where: Short Hills, New Jersey
In her own words: “We are your collaborative design ambassador, helping you establish your design point of view, bringing it to life and ensuring that design principles are followed — and the construction and production get done.”
Imagine sophisticated interiors where rich fabrics and elegant hues abound. Now add in lively young children and boisterous pets. Counter to popular belief, they can coincide quite happily with the right design. Karen Wolf, who owns her eponymous design firm in Short Hills, specializes in such spaces. “You want that livable luxury to resonate within the whole house, which is what we bring to the table,” she says. “We understand the needs of a growing, dynamic family.”

A creative soul. Wolf showed a proclivity for the arts from a young age. “As a child, I remember painting my parents’ entire kitchen while they were sleeping,” she says with a laugh. Wolf has since spent time as a fine artist, product specialist and strategic marketer before shifting to interior design. “My fine art background really comes into play in our designs,” she says. “That combined with my marketing background means we are a very professionally run business.”
Design philosophy. “I love that we’re always creating fresh, exciting environments,” Wolf says. “We don’t repeat designs — nothing is ever cookie-cutter.” She also believes design is a process. “We can bring in the bones and changeable elements, which we can then freshen up in the future and recharge your space with different energy,” Wolf says. “Your home can change with you.”

1. Mix Materials
“A mix of materials is what gives a home depth, texture and personality,” Wolf says. It helps foster a warm, welcoming environment. She layers luxe materials — think metallics and fabrics with sheen — into her designs along with natural ones. “Juxtaposing something natural with something man-made creates that wabi sabi that makes magic,” Wolf says.
The team designed this resort-style home in Mountain Lakes for a pair of empty nesters. “It’s meant to be a haven for their kids, grandkids and pets,” Wolf says. Natural pieces, such as the custom hide-topped wood ottoman, boucle pillows and leather chairs, bring texture and warmth to the great room seen here. Subtly gleaming, a patinated stainless steel side table and the hammered metal base of another provide material contrast.

2. Embrace Comfort and Performance
Opt for deep, low-to-the-ground seating in soft yet durable fabrics. “You want fabrics with a texture or pile so they’re more plush,” says Wolf, who often uses performance options. “The fabrics used to be really stiff, but now they’re really lush,” she says. “You can do light sofas now — it’s really refreshing.” Wolf’s firm offers a large resource library from which to choose fabrics.
The living room in this Short Hills home features an easy-care performance rug and two 42-inch-deep sofas in treated velvet — ideal for the clients’ three girls and two large dogs. “Two sofas are more comfortable than a large sectional,” Wolf says. “They open up the space and are more inviting — you can have more intimate conversations.”

3. Carve Out a Sanctuary
Turn your master bedroom into a personal retreat away from all the chaos. “That’s where you can really bring in elements of romance, glamour and serenity,” Wolf says. She recommends a soothing tonal palette and a resort-like feel. “The furniture forms, mattress, rug, colors, they must all be appealing to you,” she says.
Airy vaulted ceilings, velvet bedding and soft gray hues create a dreamy escape for the owners of the same Short Hills home. “We brought in blush accents to warm it up, to give a soft color pop,” Wolf says. The mirrored bed frame and traditional chandelier add glamour, while the Moroccan pendants and mother-of-pearl mirror bring a subtle boho feel. The window seat and tufted chair provide perfect spots for quiet relaxation.
