Who: Eli Kaspi of Pure Builders
Where: Calabasas, California
In his own words: “Our clients say that we start and finish projects the right way — on time and within budget.”
As the cost of buying a home continues to rise, many owners are opting to invest in their current residence rather than sell. “A lot of clients are choosing to add and remodel to stay within the interest rate they closed on years ago,” says Eli Kaspi, the owner of Calabasas general contracting firm Pure Builders. But adding on rather than buying new doesn’t have to mean boring. Below, Kaspi shares the latest trends and his best tips for your next remodeling project.

Collaborative creativity. Kaspi fell in love with design at a young age as he learned the ins and outs of the construction industry through his family’s business. Now, as president of his own firm, Kaspi takes pride in collaborating with his clients to create something new for them. From a blank canvas, an initial conversation or a rough idea, he works with homeowners to deliver transformative interiors that suit their personality and desired functionality.
Practical preparation. Kaspi and the Pure Builders team emphasize vigorous preparation before construction begins. “Communicating with the designers and architects, selecting all the materials, it’s like making sure you have every ingredient of your recipe ready before you turn on the oven,” Kaspi says. The more time spent preparing for your project, the less time your project will take.

1. Emphasizing Acoustic Privacy
For at least a decade, open-concept layouts had been the new standard. “During the pandemic, people learned the hard way that there’s value in more privacy,” Kaspi says. “Now we’re seeing a shift back to enclosed rooms and environments for homeowners who find themselves at home much more often.”
In this Thousand Oaks contemporary-style complete remodel, the kitchen and dining rooms flow together from the range top and over the spacious kitchen island to the fireplace, but the living room area is distinct. “We’re creating more separation for your living room or den where you likely have your TV,” Kaspi says.

2. Going Greener and Getting Smarter
Another trend that’s affecting homeowners positively is the dramatic improvement in residential energy efficiency. “From HVAC systems and sunproof roofing to tighter seals on windows and doors and improved siding materials, the insulation and efficiency of your home can be drastically enhanced,” Kaspi says. Plus, there are several smart home systems on the market to help control your indoor environment from your cellphone.
These Calabasas homeowners are reaping the energy-efficient rewards of their complete remodel while also enjoying the unique aesthetic they were looking for. “The original home was very old-fashioned,” Kaspi says. “We opened up the center floor so the space would feel like a New York Loft, full of light and perfect for entertaining.”

3. Embracing Aesthetic Trends
For certain changeable features of your home, “timelessness” can be overrated. Homeowners are embracing the styles they like, whether traditional, contemporary or a mix, and feeling confident knowing that they can make small updates as trends and tastes change.
This complete home remodel in Chatsworth is a perfect example. “Marble, plaster walls, white oak cabinets and flat panels are still very current,” Kaspi says. “But we are seeing people move away from quartzite in favor of natural stone.” Large-format, handmade tiles make your kitchen and bathroom look modern, particularly when paired with brass insets and plumbing features. And while warm white still dominates many home palettes, blue and green accents are making their presence known.
