Who: Nir Alkobi and Ellie Benizri of Level Up Home Remodeling
Where: San Jose, California
In Alkobi’s own words: “For us, the relationship with clients is the most important thing. We always say, ‘We don’t work with homes, we work with people.’ ”
Whether you’re planning to build your dream home or you simply want to redo a powder room, the overall project approach will remain the same. No matter the size or scope, focusing on a few areas at the outset can make all the difference. “There are three main things to think about that will lead you to a good project,” says Ellie Benizri, who co-owns Level Up Home Remodeling in San Jose with his cousin Nir Alkobi. “Choosing a good contractor, deciding on layout and considering style.” Read on to see the duo’s tips for approaching these categories.

A top-to-bottom approach. Alkobi and Benizri especially enjoy tackling whole-home projects. “We like complete renovations where we can rethink entire layouts,” Benizri says. “They’re the most challenging projects and the ones we like the most.” To this end, their firm offers design services, architectural expertise and engineering acumen in-house to suit clients’ whole-project needs.
International ideas. Born and raised in France, Benizri pulls from that detail-oriented old-world sense of design and craftsmanship. “It’s all about the art of construction there,” he says. Alkobi adds, “We’ve seen houses all over the world — South America, Asia, Europe — and we get inspiration from places we’ve traveled.”
Ready to pave the way to an easier project? Benizri and Alkobi share their tips below.

1. Look for Contractor Fit
Finding a contractor you trust and like is important, Alkobi says. “If you have a good connection with your contractor, it will lead to a successful project.”
The team built this Los Altos custom home, getting to know the homeowners’ tastes and needs in the process. The open kitchen was designed so the parents can watch their kids in the family room while standing at the island cooktop. The downdraft hood disappears into the island, putting the focus on the chandelier overhead. Alkobi became such good friends with the homeowners over the course of the project that they now attend each other’s baby showers and birthday parties.

2. Think About Layout
The right layout can transform your home, so be sure to keep room size and flow in mind, Benizri says. “Making the design appeal to your needs will result in spaces you love.”
The modern-style bathroom in this downtown San Jose condo was once a diminutive powder room that the owner wanted refreshed. “We were really creative and figured out how to get the best results out of a very restricted area,” Benizri says. They borrowed space from the laundry area to build a full bathroom, adding a shower and full vanity, then tucked the washer and dryer into a closet. Now the homeowner has the full bathroom he wanted.

3. Decide on Your Style
Express your personality through your home’s style. Color, materials, shapes and finishes should all come into play when you’re considering your aesthetic, Alkobi says.
For the same Los Altos custom home, the owners had asked for a modern California look. Using 3D technology, the team walked the owners through their ideas before building. They created a pitched roof over the porch to welcome family and guests. Ipe wood siding provides a warm counterpoint to the smooth, cool stucco cladding on the other side of the house. Black-framed windows add a bold pop.
