Who: Faye Nielsen of The Nielsen Collection
Where: Irving, Texas
In her own words: “We live such busy lives, so it’s nice to come home to a quiet space without busyness. That’s why contemporary design works so well.”
With its sleek, sculptural lines and clean, minimalist aesthetic, contemporary design has an undeniable allure. Unfussy by nature, this style evokes a calming, uncluttered ambiance where life can slow down. “People want to come home and have a quietness,” says Faye Nielsen, who owns The Nielsen Collection, an interior design firm in Irving. “In contemporary homes, you don’t have to fill every space and wall, so you can spend more money on technology and comforts.”

A passion unfurls. Growing up in the countryside, Nielsen was surrounded by nature’s beauty, and her imagination flourished. “We would go out into the woods, and my mom could make anything out of nothing,” she says. “She had a huge garden and would have flowers in the house all the time.” They would often rearrange furniture on a whim. Nielsen even added some personal flair to the kitchen: “I painted flowers on the [newly white] cabinets, and my mom let them stay there for years.”
Launching a career. Nielsen worked as a flight attendant, traveling around the country, before transitioning into design. “I often found inspiration in hotel lobbies and rooms; I would go in and see how they did everything,” she says. She strives to make good design attainable for all: “I want everyone to feel that they can talk to a designer, and we share our trade pricing with our clients.”

1. Get the Light Right
Innovative lighting design can transform a room. “It’s so important to get the correct lighting in your space, and [this aspect is] often overlooked,” Nielsen says. “Lighting is going to make your colors look right or look wrong.”
This Lewisville yard sports blue lights under custom-fabricated discs for a futuristic effect. “Cobalt blue is the client’s favorite color,” Nielsen says. The outdoor kitchen’s 16-foot hood also features blue lights in the form of stripes. LED lighting illuminates the rest of the yard, adding an edge to the space.

2. Go With Geometry
Geometric shapes add visual interest and an element of fun to a space. “They give you something to look at and make you think outside the box,” says Nielsen, an origami aficionado. For example, the crisp shapes in this Highlands Village kitchen evoke the feel of a contemporary art gallery.
The pointed, sculptural island support originated from a shadow in Nielsen’s kitchen rendering. She liked the look of it so much that she added it to the design. The embedded LED lights and air vents in the metal ceiling continue the geometric aesthetic.

3. Tap Into Texture
Embrace unusual textures for a home that goes against the grain. “Texture brings a room to life; it speaks to you,” Nielsen says. She’s used materials such as glass and stone bubbles and woven vinyl that looks like wood to bring charisma to a space.
The bathroom in the same Highlands Village home features metallic tile. The smooth, sculptural mirrored material gives the appearance of liquid mercury or shimmering water, Nielsen says. It’s a nice juxtaposition to the flat porcelain tile used on the floor and in the shower.
