LIGHTING

1. NATURAL LIGHT - The natural sun light in this space is provied through the floor to ceiling glass wall (perhaps a sliding door). It incorporates the green of the foliage and trees as well as the dappled blue skylight into the pallette of the room. The fire place provides combustion light. It seems like it would pick up where the sun leaves off after sunset since the window and fire are both on the same end of the room.

2. TASK LIGHTING - I love the way the task lights in this space allow the work surfaces to be illuminated from a distance but without washing out or casting excess light in the rest of the space. The white walls and ceiling here remain shadowed, but the task lighting brightens the spaces where it is needed for cooking and food prep. The lighting seems to be aligned to avoid the spaces where the people would stand, so it would avoid casting shadows on to the surfaces.

3. ACCENT LIGHTING - these lights provide only light to the objects on the shelf. They bring my eye and attention to the objects to make them pop. they are not illuminating the rest of the space so they stand out from the dimmer light in the rest of the area. It draws me in and makes the objects special.

4. AMBIENT LIGHTING - the ambient lighting for this staircase almost makes it feel like the staris themselves are emitting light. There are no blubs blaring on the stairs and its almost hard to tell where the light comes from. It just fills in the space of the staircase without calling out the fixtures themselves. I don't see any shodws from this light installation either.

5. GRAZING LIGHT - this light grazes along the bricks and shows off the texttures and the nooks and crannies and differences in how they protrude. The light is placed right along the top of the wall and creates big highlights and shadows.

6. Perimeter LIGHTING - the lighting along the perimeter of the deiling highlights both the vaulted nture of the cileing as well as the materials of it. It feels like it fills in an all arounf=d light that allows the centeral fixture to back off from needing to fill the space.

7. UP LIGHT - this uplight theme has eliminated any overhead fixtures. The main hallway is illuminated indeircetly from a hidden source along the floor/wall juncture. The hallway in the background uses a visible strip of blue lights set into the floor. The table in the left of the foreground creatively provides up-lighting right through the glass table top from an unseen light source below.

8. COVE LIGHTING - the lighting in this hallway is hidden by a soffit that drops from the ceiling but also follows the curve of the hallway. It is very effective in emphasizing the curved shpe ofthe space .

9. RECESSED - the lights in the ceiling here are the baffle type that set the bulbs up above the lower surface of the ceiling.

10.DROP LIGHTING - these servce as task lights for he dining counter by dropping the lights lower and closer to the surface. They seem like they might be a little too low and in the line of sight if guests are standing around the space.

11. WALL WASHING - the lighting on this decorative wall is pulled away from the wall just far enough that is washes the enitre wall while avoiding harsh contrasts and shadows that would happen if it was grazing staight down. It shows off the entire wall without being directed into the space.

12. SCONCE - the sconces lining thos hallway provide lighting along the wall rather than overhead. They may have solved a difficult ceiling slope hat prevented overhead lighting.

13. 2x2 and 4x4 lighting - this office breakroom area has the typical flourescent lights in the ceilings integrated into the t-bar style drop acoustical panels. It is less favorable than the style that allows indirect light to reflect back into a space

14. INCANDESCENT LIGHTING- these globe blubs have clearly visible incandescent filaments clearly being shown off through the globes. The visible filaments themselves are part of the design element for their own look more than for the purpose of illuminating the space.

15. FLOURESCENT LIGHT - the light from florescent tubes radiates evenly from the length of the tubes. Thats an effect of the phosphoros coating inside the tube emtting light as opposed to point sources like LEDs. I like the way this space uses flourescents in the ceiling sconces without allowing the tubes to be visible. It avoids the potentially industrial feel that tubes would bring. It also shows how the technology of flourescents has improved to provide a warmer (lower kelvin rating) temperature lighting.

16. CREATIVE LIGHTING 1 - this lighting combines a few of the light types. Ambient because I can't see any of the bulbs or fixtures. Accent, because it really highlights the perimeter lines of the furniture. It also is a great use up up llighting.

17. CREATIVE LIGHTING - this stained glass uses natural lighting but then moves it towrds the "light as art" category by giving it color, deisgn and mood.
