Houzz Inc., the leading platform for home renovation and design, today introduced its latest augmented reality (AR) feature within its app for iPhone and iPad, available for free exclusively on the App Store. The feature, part of Houzz’s View in My Room 3D tool, enables shoppers to virtually hang wall products such as paintings in their homes, true to scale, using patent-pending technology.
To use the feature, a shopper simply places their phone against the wall to virtually hang a product. With this app update, shoppers can also virtually hang ceiling products such as pendant lights, and place small products like table lamps on top of tables and other surfaces -- both 3D objects and real world surfaces. Houzz’s 3D product catalogue has more than doubled since September 2017 to more than one million home furniture, decor and remodeling products for every style and budget -- from sofas to bathroom vanities.

As View in My Room 3D is fully integrated with the Houzz platform, people can get inspired from the 15 million home design photos on Houzz, discover products they love in the photos, view them in AR, and instantly buy them from the comfort of their home, without having to go to a furniture store. Each product viewed in 3D is automatically kept in a shopping list for easy checkout.
Since Houzz launched the initial version of View in My Room 3D within its app for iPhone and iPad in May 2017, over a million people have used AR when buying products in the Houzz app. People who engaged with the tool were 11X more likely to purchase and spent 2.7X more time in the app. The View in My Room 3D tool is the work of Houzz Labs, an in-house team dedicated to applying the latest in visual technologies, including visual search and augmented reality, to the home design and shopping experience.
To use the feature, a shopper simply taps the View in My Room 3D button on a product page for any 3D-enabled wall or ceiling product, launching the iPhone or iPad camera. When the camera is held up to display the room, the selected product will appear in 3D in the screen. To virtually hang a wall product, shoppers scan the floor and place the phone flat against the wall. For ceiling products, shoppers scan the floor and look up at the ceiling with the phone’s camera. Shoppers can manipulate the item, rotating and placing it at the best position and angle to see how the product would look in their home. People can then buy the product within the Houzz app easily and securely with just a touch using Apple Pay. Or they can capture what’s on their screen, creating a Sketch that is saved to a Houzz ideabook, where it can be shared with family, a home professional or other collaborators.
